I’ve spent the last year becoming a student of The Points Guy. What started as an attempt to earn enough points/miles to save us $7,000 when we travel to China to pick up our little lady, has turned into a sort of hobby. Okay, obsession. I have since saved over 600,000 points which is more than enough to get us to China and back (in the front of the plane) as well as pay for our hotel while we are there. But beyond the free travel, I’ve learned so much more than I ever even knew there was to learn. Which is what led me to choosing my flight yesterday a little differently than normal, thus allowing me the chance to fly on a newly remodeled, Boeing 767-400 airplane in an upgraded Comfort+ Class seat that I didn’t pay extra to sit in.
While this topic is quite literally a rabbit hole you can and will fall into if you’ve got time and interest, I’ll leave you with the basics today and how I got such a dope seat yesterday for free – my Delta Amex Business Reserve Credit Card. If you have a business, check this card out. It has a ton of benefits, including a free companion ticket every year in a corresponding class (first, comfort+, main cabin, etc), travel protection, rental car insurance, first bag checked for free, and unlimited complimentary upgrades. There it is.
I paid $363 for a Main cabin class, round trip ticket to Florida last week. My flight from SBN to ATL was in a tiny, little 13 row plane. Because of CV19 Delta is only selling every other seat so that meant this plane was full and I didn’t get an upgrade. However, my flight from ATL to ECP had room and I ended up in a beautiful, Comfort+ seat for free. If I had paid to upgrade that seat myself, it would’ve cost me $49 just for that one segment of the trip. My return flight home was on the same two airplanes, but after doing a little research, I found the big, international airplane the Boeing 767-400 was flying from ATL to DTW, with a connection form DTW to SBN that would arrive at the same time as my original flight. That big Boeing jet was a MUCH better flight choice for several reasons. To start, the size of it meant more seats, which meant more likelihood that I’d get one of those beautiful, free upgrades thanks to my Delta Amex Business Reserve Credit Card. Also, it had been remodeled so that was a big plus. It was just all around a much better plane to be on than one of those tiny, 13 row planes. Thanks to my Delta Amex, I was able to switch flights with no changeover fee!
My travel day yesterday went something like this – Upgraded to First Class (Value $129) from ECP-ATL. Upgraded to Comfort + ATL-DTW (Value $49) and finally, upgraded to Comfort+ on the DTW-SBN Flight (value $49). Round trip, I received over $276 in free upgrades thanks to being a Delta Amex cardholder yesterday. That doesn’t even touch on the fact that the card also got me into the Delta Skyclub for free (hello to a wonderful free meal, complimentary champagne, gorgeous (clean) bathrooms) and my Comfort+ and First class seats included free alcohol, food and better snacks if I wanted them – I did opt in on the glass of chardonnay yesterday evening.
I can’t say enough good things about this card. I’ve barely scratched the surface in this post on the value this card holds. I will be posting more in the future. All the links above take you straight to details on the card if you’ve got a business and want to look into the Delta card for yourself, or you can click the photo below.
